In Depth Review

Do you earn more than $35,000? Do you travel a lot either domestically or internationally? If so, then the Citibank Emirates card will have you travelling in style.

Yay!

The card rewards you with 1.5 Skywards miles per $1 spend (with a limited offer for new applicants of 3 Skyward miles per $1). These Skywards miles can be used domestically on Virgin Blue and internationally on Emirates, Continental, Japan Airlines, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Korean Air, South African Airways and United, plus a broad spectrum of hotels and car rental agencies. The card also gives you chauffeur service to and from Australian airports, lounge access in Australia and Dubai, 24/7 concierge service, and international travel and purchase cover insurance all for free.

Boo!

Maybe free is overstating things. You do pay a $0 p.a. annual fee for all these perks. On top of that there is no interest free period on purchases. While most cards give you 40-55 days from purchase until you have to start paying interest, the Emirates card does not. The 20.99% p.a. interest rate is charged immediately from purchase.

In the end …

If you travel a lot, and take advantage of all these services, then there could be value in this card. How much would it cost for just one chauffeur ride to and from airport? Just be sure you can pay off your monthly bill or you could end up too broke to fly anywhere.
